Eye exercises
One of the best ways to do eye exercises is to use the sun as the focal point (do not look at it directly but, rather, around it) during less intense sunlight hours (typically between 6-8 a.m. and after 6-8 p.m. [Winter and Summer time changes]) in order to strengthen the "oculo-endocrine system." The key to this therapy is the invisible ultraviolet band, and the retina. While the visible bands of light stimulate the retina's cone and rods that produce vision, the invisible band stimulates the adjacent epithelial cells, which transmit the stimulus as a powerful nerve impulse through the optic nerve directly to the pituitary and pineal glands. This is a powerful healing and strengthening exercise for the eyes.
* Close your eyes tightly for 3-5 seconds. Open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat 8 times. Now, look once to the north of the sun (about 15 degrees above it) while blinking the eyes for 3-5 seconds.
*Do the same after looking to the east (right), south (below) and west (left) of the sun. Again, do not look directly at the sun, as the as the part of the retina we want to hit with the rays of the sun is on the sides and not the center. Make up and down eye movements, starting from up to down. Do this 8 times. Then do the side to side eye movement, starting from left to right. Repeat this 8 times. Be sure not to force your eyes further than they want to go in any particular direction, or you risk making your vision worse.
*Start at the center, looking straight ahead, begin to move eyesight up to 12 o’clock, back to the center then to 1 o’clock, back to the center then to 2 o’clock, back to the center then to 3 o’clock, back to the center then to 4 o’clock, back to the center then to 5 o’clock, back to the center then to 6 o’clock, back to the center then to 7 o’clock, back to the center then to 8 o’clock, back to the center then to 9 o’clock, back to the center then to 10 o’clock, back to the center then to 11 o’clock, back to the center then to 12 o’clock, and now reverse, do counter clockwise.
* The "Tromboning" exercise hold a pencil in front of you at arm's length. Move your arm slowly to your nose. Follow the pencil with your eyes until you can't keep it in focus. Repeat 10 times. (Another approach is to tie an object to a hanging light string and swing it to and fro while you try to keep the dangle in focus.) Now, focus on a distant object (over 150 feet or 50 m away) for 10-15 seconds. Then, slowly refocus your eyes on a nearby object (less than 30 feet or 10 m away) without moving your head. Focus for again for 10-15 seconds, and go back to the distant object. Do this 5 times. Try sitting about 6 inches (15 cm) from a window. Make a mark on the glass (ideally a small red or black sticker) at eye-level. Look through this mark and focus on something far away, then adjust your focus to the mark.
* Acupressure exercises had you applying firm pressure to specific points surrounding the eyeball. You would press for just a second, then release, and continue this pattern. Basically, it was a massage for the muscles surrounding the eye.
* Massage your eyes. Hot and Cold Compress: Soak one towel in hot water, and the other in cold. Take one and lightly press it to your face, focusing on your eyebrows, closed eyelids, and cheeks. Alternate between the two as desired, making sure to end with a cold compress. Eyelid Massage: Close your eyes and massage them with circular movements of your fingers for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you press very lightly and have washed your hands to avoid damaging your eyes.
* Sit comfortably on a chair. Rub your hands together until they feel warm. Close your eyes and cover them lightly with your cupped palms. Avoid applying pressure to your eyeballs. Your nose should not be covered. Make sure no light rays can enter your eyes though gaps between your fingers or the edges of your palms and nose. You may still see other lingering traces of colors. Imagine deep blackness and focus on it. Take deep breaths slowly and evenly while thinking of some happy incident, or visualize a distant scene. After you see nothing but blackness, remove your palms from your eyes. Repeat the palming for 3 minutes or more.
Nourish your eyes and brain
Of course, the general rule is eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, especially in various carotenoids (typically yellow, orange and red pigments) will help protect and improve eyesight.
Foods that are high in carotenoids:
• Carrots
• Sweet potatoes
• Pumpkin
• Spinach
• Broccoli
• Goji berries
• Cantaloupe
• Apricots
Also consider Eyebright, Bilberry, Red Pepper (Cayenne Pepper), Red Raspberry and Bayberry Bark for additional benefits, as well as foods high in zinc such as Pumpkin Seeds, Spinach, and Beans. Another important part of clear vision is brain function, so ensure that you eat plenty of healthy brain foods as well are Avocados, Coconut Oil, Hemp Oil, Walnuts and Brazil Nuts.
Detoxify your liver
In Taoism and according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a strong relationship between your liver and eye health. The liver is your main detoxifier and filter of your bloodstream. Take the letter ‘R’ off of ‘Liver’ and you get the word ‘Live’. No coincidence that the liver serves over 500 functions in the human body, including: detoxifying environmental chemicals, storing certain vitamins, controlling cholesterol levels, metabolizing fat, and even regulating hormones. Now, more than ever, your liver may need cleansing to help it detoxify alcohol, tobacco smoke, environmental pollutants, food additives, pesticides, and hidden chemicals in your personal care products. A functioning liver works as our bodies' fat-burning organ: It converts nutrients from the food we eat into essential blood components, storing vitamins and minerals and producing proteins and enzymes to maintain hormone balances in our bodies. Our livers also help our immune system fight infections, remove bacteria from the blood and make bile, which is essential for digesting our meals. Take a high quality multivitamin and mineral supplement to avoid any deficiencies. The liver depends on many nutrients to detoxify properly. Even a single nutrient deficiency can be harmful. In addition, take 1000 to 2000 mg of vitamin C daily, even if there is vitamin C in your multivitamin.
Any toxins you ingest eventually end up in your liver to be broken down and excreted from your body. However, when the liver becomes compromised, the quantity of toxins increases, causing free radical damage and harm to your organs and tissues. Liver blood deficiency can cause, dry burning eyes, floaters, blurry vision and even near sightedness. Drink plenty of water with the juice of one-half to one lemon squeezed into it. Your body needs water to flush out toxins in your bowel movements and urine. Lemons also help our bodies cleanse out toxic materials and aid the digestion process. The addition of fresh lemon juice helps to stimulate your liver to produce bile that helps flush out toxins. Eating or drinking grapefruit juice can help your liver flush out carcinogens and toxins. This fruit is also high in both vitamin C and antioxidant properties. Eat plenty of fresh carrots and beets, both of which are powerful liver cleansing and rebuilding foods. Carrots have high amounts of Vitamin A and carotids, which helps cleanse the liver. Beets are high in plant-flavonoids, which can improve the overall functions of your liver. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, lettuce and greens have the ability to neutralize metals, chemicals and pesticides that may be in our foods, and act as a protective mechanism for the liver. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts also increase the amount of glucosinolate (organic compounds) in our bodies that helps create enzyme production for digestion. Walnuts are also high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids, which help support our liver through its cleansing process. The best herbs to help with the detoxifying the liver are Dandelion, Milk Thistle, Golden Seal, Chicory Root, Tumeric, Peppermint, Slippery Elm, Barberry, Vervain and Yellow Dock.
